Would you like to be involved in the coordination of a one-week course for 2nd year medical students?
Most of the resources to run the week are already in place, but there is every opportunity to change and add topics.
There is an honorarium of approximately £500.
This is presented as a short course in Global Health (GH) over a week, twice a year.
During 2020/21 this has been undertaken via Zoom with a mixture of live/mainly pre-recorded lectures in the mornings and SDL (self-directed learning) in the afternoons. SDL has been in the form of preparing a lecture note style student textbook chapter on a topic for Global Health and a presentation (same topic) for a Global Health symposium on the last day.
Professor Alison Fiander has been leading/coordinating the SSC for the last year (on behalf of the W&AHLN) and would like to hand this over so that she can concentrate on developing other SSCs.
Dates for 2021-22 are as follows –
Experience Week 1: Monday 8th November 2021 – Friday 12th November 2021;
Experience Week 2: Monday 28th March 2022 – Friday 1st April 2022.
As well as the week of the SSC the new coordinator would need to review the programme; invite some of the speakers to attend live Q&A sessions; set textbook chapter and presentation topics and send information to the students ahead of the course (possibly asking them to introduce themselves - Alison did this via Teams, where she also uploaded additional resources).
The medical school will help in setting up the Zoom call and Teams site.
A couple of people helped assess the presentations at the Global Health symposium. After the SSC week the SDL work needs to be assessed – this is via a dedicated link set up by the medical school. Alison would be happy to guide a new GH SSC coordinator through the process.
