Shared Learning Events (SLE)
North Wales May 14th
We have a SLE being planned for North Wales on May 14th led by Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB) International Health group and our links in North Wales.
The venue is the Postgraduate Centre, Ysbyty Glan Clwyd, Bodelwyddan, Rhyl LL185UJ between 1.30pm - 5pm.
Please register via Eventbrite and it is a free event.
Please come if you can and hear about the activities of local links and the work that Betsi University Health Board are doing.
South Wales July 13th Cardiff
We have now got a date for our SE Wales SLE and have booked the Michael Griffith building for the SLE between 11am-3pm in one of the Seminar Rooms. This is in Cardiff University, Heath Park, Cardiff CF14 4XN At the SLE we will hear from local South Wales health links and also from the Cardiff University Phoenix project and their work in Namibia with the University of Namibia.
After the SLE on July 13th we are delighted to host Mr David Nott who will be well known for his exceptional work in war zones such as Syria, Afghanistan and many parts of Africa such as Sierra Leone, Darfur, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Chad and the DRC. His public lecture will be “surgery and skills training in ‘austere’ settings”.
David was awarded the 2017 St David’s award for International work by the Welsh Government and he has family roots in Carmarthenshire and received an Hon Doctorate from Trinity St David’s too!
He works as a general surgeon in three London Hospitals and each year takes unpaid leave to work with relief organisations such as MSF/International Red Cross and Syria relief. He regularly uses VOI mechanisms such as Skype to guide local surgeons undertaking emergency surgery. He recently was in the national media with concerns that his computer link was being misused to guide bombing attacks on hospitals in Syria.
In the UK David teach overseas surgeons on Definitive surgical trauma skills and Surgical training for the austere environment. This work is part of the Royal College of Surgeons.
The Lecture is open to the public, will be held in the Michael Griffith Lecture Theatre, Cardiff University, Heath Park at 3.30pm on Friday July 13th and registration will be via Eventbrite.
WFAHLN Annual General Meeting (AGM)
We will hold the WFAHLN AGM after the public lecture on July 13th followed by a celebratory drinks reception. The papers for the AGM will be circulated and the nomination forms for the posts of Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary and Treasurer. It is important for links to join us at the Age to nominate new Trustees and engage in the maintenance and development of the Wales for Africa Health Links Network (WFAHLN)
2018 Grants round
It seems likely that WCVA will be advertising the new grants round for 2018/19 in May with bids to be submitted by July 2018. So please keep an eye on the WCVA website (www.wcva.org.uk) and we will of course send an email around as soon as we hear. Remember that there is still a ring fenced £50K for health bids linked to NHS Wales partners. It is best to have developed an MOU with your local Health Board or Trust.
Although no longer administering the grants process the Hub Cymru Africa (HCA) staff will be available to groups to advise on submitting bids and provide the necessary safeguards on governance - financial and staff conduct and the safety of volunteers. (www.hubcymru.org).

Hub Cymru Africa (HCA)
HCA led by Cat Jones and hosted by the Wales Centre for International Affairs (WCIA) - will continue to hold the contract for development support for health links amongst others. The Partnership Board for HCA consist of four partner organisations - WCIA who host the Hub, Fair Trade Wales (FTW), Sub Saharan Africa Partnership (SSAP) and WFAHLN. Discussions are underway between the HCA Partnership Board, the WCIA and WCVA about how we can continue to work effectively in partnership. There have been some staff changes at HCA with Julian Rosser leaving and Liz Rees moving on to work in development overseas. Beth Kidd is on maternity leave having given birth to a baby girl a few weeks ago!
As you know we do not have a staff member within the team so have had to agree an MOU with HCA staff and this is available on our website (www.wfahln.com). In essence this commits HCA to supporting three Shared Learning Events each year, an Annual Wales Africa Health Conference and looking to WFAHLN for leadership in the partnership on health and wellbeing and for us to share information. There is a Strategic Planning Away day for Hub partners booked on July 19th to which Katherin and I have been invited to participate.
We are hopeful that we will be able to stage our Annual Wales Africa Health Conference in September in partnership with HCA and the International Health Co-ordinating Centre (IHCC) based in Public Health Wales. There has been some slippage in the planning of the Hub International Health Summit and as the annual conference is an important part of our annual cycle of networking we are proceeding with a stand-alone conference. We hope to have it in early September so it does not clash with the Tropical Health Education Trust (THET) conference on September 28th www.thet.org.uk
