2017 Wales Africa Health Conference

The 2017 Wales Africa Health Conference was excellent. Held at the SWALEC stadium on a beautiful warm July day we had to close new registrations when they hit the 160 mark! The conference is jointly sponsored by the Wales for Africa Health Links Network, Hub Cymru Africa and Public Health Wales (IHCC). It is funded through Welsh Gov grants and this year focused on the Ebola epidemic in a West Africa and how we can support African partners to strengthen their health systems, especially by building nurse leadership and capacity, to deliver the sustainable health goals (SDGs) The Chief Nursing Officer Prof Jean White opened the morning session and Cabinet Secretary Vaughan Gething showed his and the Welsh Governments support in the afternoon. Two excellent speakers shared their experience in the Sierra Leone Ebola epidemic and other health emergencies in Africa and elsewhere. The NHS Wales leaders also spoke about the health links and international strategies and research collaboration. In the afternoon session we heard from two speakers based in East, Central and South Africa on strengthening health systems and specifically the role of nurse leaders. The programme and speaker bios are attached. Please also look at the Twitter/FB content to get a feel for the energy and commitment of delegates. There is much to do in Sub Saharan Africa and Welsh Health Links are playing their part and learning/benefiting from the experience. Join us!
